The testing can also be used to exclude candidates who believe to be the father of the child. There are several ways to establish paternity through DNA testing.Buccal SwabThe Buccal swab test is a dna paternity testing method performed with a buccal swab, which resembles a cotton swab. The swab has a long stem and has one cotton covered tip. Buccal swab testing is performed at a clinical laboratory, and is done by swabbing the inside of the cheek with the swab to gather cells. The cells inside the cheek contain DNA and HLA, and can be used to establish paternity. The samples will be sent for testing and is the most painless and common way to establish paternity.Prenatal TestingThere are two ways to perform dna paternity testing prior to the child's birth. The first test is a chronic villus sampling (CVS). A CVS is performed 10-13 weeks into a pregnancy. A thin needle is inserted into the vagina and cervix to collect chronic villus samples, which are pieces of tissue on the uterus. The second dna paternity testing method that can be done prenatally is Amniocentesis. This procedure is performed in the second trimester of pregnancy. During an Amniocentesis, amniotic fluid from the uterus and abdomen are collected with a needle. This form of dna paternity testing has risks, including miscarriage. A physician must approve both procedures.Home TestingHome dna paternity testing can be 99% effective when directions are followed, and can be done in the privacy of your home. Most home testing kits require you to swab the inside of the mouths of the child and potential father. The swabs are placed in a sealed container, and are to be mailed to a laboratory for testing. |
